What makes an excellent online teacher?

Taking a joint step to forge digital competencies in higher education didactics

Higher education teachers face increasing challenges posed by technological development and the shift from face-to-face teaching to online and blended forms of learning. As the COVID-19 pandemic triggered an unprecedented growth in the use of digital education tools, and the recent spread of AI tools is revolutionizing the education sector, novel approaches to student-teacher interactions become a necessity. All these processes underline the importance of digital competencies of higher education teachers.

We want to help in answering these challenges by forming a network of people and institutions that exchange knowledge and practices and co-develop beneficial toolkits.

We invite all higher education teachers and stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds to participate in the meeting focused on taking the first step towards these aims. Utilizing the results of the ADVICE project, we would like to discuss the experiences and goals in the network, to establish synergy and leverage future impact.

DATE: 18th September 2023, 10 AM - 1 PM CET

FORUM: Zoom platform

AGENDA:

  • The ADVICE Project Results: presenting the ADVICE Hub and recommendations of the stakeholders.
  • The Challenges We Face: discussing experiences of participants.
  • The Steps We Take: designing the goals of the network.

The meeting will be held as an international multiplier event of Advancing Digital Competence in Higher Education (ADVICE), within the Erasmus Plus Strategic Partnership Programme, project nr 2020-1-PL01-KA226-HE-096098.

Information about the project:
ADVICE is a project of the partnership between Collegium Civitas (leader), Agricultural University of Athens, University of Northampton and Sapienza University of Rome. Within the ADVICE project we have developed a digital learning platform and recommendations for various stakeholders.

The platform is aimed at upskilling academics and higher education teachers. Users will have access to six short surveys split across a range of digital competencies, to help them identify their strengths and weaknesses. Upon completion, a range of relevant third-party online resources will be recommended that may be useful in developing their digital skills. The platform is aimed at all levels of competency with the goal of allowing both academics conducting their first blended learning session, and those looking to build digital spaces for their students to get something out of it.

The recommendations are aimed at showing the interconnection and importance of actions led by higher-education teachers, decision-makers and students in the development of digital competencies.
