Dlaczego "Jazz w Ruinach"? Bo od samego początku festiwal związał się z miejscem niezwykłym i jedynym w swoim rodzaju - Ruinami Teatru Victoria w Gliwicach.

Wystarczy przypomnieć, że obiekt ten jest porównywany do paryskiej sceny Petera Brooka Bouffes du Nord. W grudniu 1997 roku budynek Teatru Miejskiego został wpisany do rejestru zabytków województwa śląskiego. Rok później w plebiscycie "Gazety Wyborczej" został uznany za "najbardziej magiczne miejsce" na Górnym Śląsku.


Dlaczego młody jazz prezentujemy w ruinach?



Po pierwsze dlatego, że szczerze wierzymy w odrodzenie Ruin Teatru Victoria w Gliwicach. Wierzymy, że powstanie jak feniks z popiołów. Staramy się zarażać ruiny młodością i pobudzać nowatorską twórczością.

A po drugie często w historii jazzu nowe zjawiska były uznawane za... koniec jazzu. Tak było z be-bopep, free jazzem, etc. A jednak historia pokazała, że ten koniec był początkiem czegoś nowego, ale wciąż zakorzenionego w jazzie. Stąd ruiny wydają się idealnym miejsce dla festiwalu o takiej idei jak ten festiwal. Czyli prezentacji jak młodzi twórcy rozumieją jazz.


A że przy okazji Ruiny Teatru w Gliwicach to po prostu fajne miejsce w centrum dużego miasta w największej w Polsce aglomeracji … no cóż ...

Why “Jazz in the Ruins"? Well, because from the very beginning the festival has been bonded with a very unique place - the Victoria Theatre’s Ruins in Gliwice, Poland.
It’s worth to mention that the building has been often compared to the Peter Brook’s Bouffes du Nord and in 1997 was registered as a monument of an important historical value of the Silesian region. A year later the Victoria Theatre’s Ruins won a plebiscite by “Gazeta Wyborcza" as the most magical place in the whole Upper Silesia region.

Why to present young jazz in ruins?

First of all, we truly believe in a revival of the Victoria Theatre’s Ruins in Gliwice. We believe it will raise again like a phoenix from the ashes. So, we try to “infect" the Ruins with youth and energy, to stimulate it with an innovative creativity.

Second of all, as it has happened so many times before in the history of jazz, a new approach to jazz music, new styles, new ways of exploration had been considered as … the end of jazz. That’s what most of critics had said about be bop, hard bop, free jazz, fusion and other new branches of jazz. And, as the history has shown those had been the beginnings of something new, not the end. Beginnings, not a beginning, almost like in the circle of life. And that’s why ruins seem an ideal place for a festival with an idée fixe this one - the presentation of new, young generations of jazz musicians.

And at last but not least, the Victoria Theatre’s Ruins are just a great place in the centre of a big city in the biggest agglomeration in Poland … well … can you think of any better place?
