PROGRAM ZLU 2017 - ENG
The Green European Foundation, with the support of the Fundacja Strefa Zieleni, the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Warsawand the European Parliament- carries out the third
Green Summer Academy "Hope and cope"
in Puszczykowo near Poznan, 13-16 July 2017
After good experiences of 2015 and 2016 we continue to carry out a Green Summer Academy in Poland. We will meet in an extremely important year for the EU, with the Brexit negotiations, the elections in France, Germany and Netherlands, the unpredictability of the US administration of newly elected president Donald Trump and the crisis of democracy in Poland and Hungary. All these developments will directly and indirectly impact on the progress of the global climate policy and the implementation of the Paris Agreement. Next year's municipal election in Poland makes us focus on the role of regions and cities in the transition into low carbon societies as well as in other progressive transformations. We will reflect on whether the European Pact of Amsterdam can play a role in this transition. One of the cornerstones of the green vision of the world is sustainable development, for which the preservation of pure environment and natural habitats rich in biodiversity for future generations is as important as ensuring short term economic efficiency and social justice. Therefore, our Green Summer Universities gives participants an opportunity to enter into a direct relationship with living nature and thus provide them with additional knowledge, sensitivity and motivation for its protection and political representation of its interests. The mega projects of Trans-European waterways that pose a threat to principal Polish rivers, together with a badly implemented Water Frame Directive, make water ecosystems a major field of interest for ecological outdoor expeditions during this third Green Summer Academy, located in the heart of the Natural Park of Greater Poland.
As Eastern European countries share many challenges specific to post-communism, we have invited Green representatives not only from Czech Republic and Hungry, but also from our non-UE neighbour country Ukraine. We will exchange views and experiences and learn from each other. The presence of urban movements, NGOs and grassroots activists will help to develop future cooperation and continue the European Ideas Lab launched in February 2017 by the European Greens.
It is now really time to learn and debate about what people consider the most important in politics, i.e. economics and economic activity. Therefore one of the central, independent elements of this year's Green Summer Academy is the seminar on "Green Economy", organized by Fundacja Strefa Zieleni in partnership with Heinrich Böll Foundation in Warsaw. It will consist of an introductory lecture and a general debate on Friday, to be followed by two more specific workshops on circular economies and the commons in practice Saturday. Here you can form your own opinion on different concepts that Greens propose or support in response to the growing challenges of today's world. This will be an occasion to study not only general directions, but also to discuss specific local solutions.
Last not least, in Puszczykowo we open ourselves to the problems of the local community, in the heart of the National Park of Greater Poland, which currently celebrates its 60th anniversary. Together with locally engaged inhabitants we will talk about the realities of their lives and their coexistence with precious nature, all thisin close proximity to the city of Poznan.

PART ITHE FUTURE OF EUROPE AND POLAND IN THE EU | |
10:00 - 11:30 | "Europe after Brexit. Will the Green transition still be possible?"- debateThis debate is part of the international GEF project "The potential impact of Brexit on the prospects for a Green transition in Europe" Introductions: Philippe Lamberts video, GGEP; Dr Ray Cunningham (Green House think-tank, UK) Debate: Dr Ray Cunningham, Lucile Schmid (GEF/FEP, France), Marek Kossakowski (Partia Zieloni, Poland), Kuba Gogolewski (RT-ON Foundation). Presentation: Ewa Sufin-Jacquemart (FSZ). Moderation: Bartłomiej Kozek (GEJ) Brexit will have a huge impact on the UK and EU economies and on virtually every area of policy, which makes informed policy and public discussion of that impact and the choices that will have to be made to deal with it a necessity. Beyond that, it calls into question the coherence and effectiveness of the EU as a polity, and as a vehicle for the Green movement. Greens are committed to the belief that European countries can make the transition to sustainability more quickly as a coordinated polity (the EU) than as individual states or societies but this assumption may need to be re-examined.
